The
Marshfield Mariner A Few Good Men By Ryan Bray Wednesday,
December 21, 2005 Today’s
children are tomorrow’s leaders, whether they realize it or not. For
those who aren’t so sure, there’s DeMolay. DeMolay
International has been helping shape young men into leaders since 1919 through
activities stressing responsibility, self-confidence and civic awareness. The
Kansas City-based organization is responsible for influencing many strong male
role models including Walter Cronkite, Fran Tarkenton and John Wayne, to name
but a few. Now
in their 86th year, the DeMolays have started a local chapter. The organization
opened the doors to its South Coastal group earlier this month, making Marshfield’s
the 16th DeMolay chapter in Massachusetts. Seven members ages 12 to 21 currently
make up the chapter alongside seven adult advisers. New members are being accepted
by the chapter, which is open to any young man looking to get involved. "There
was a time when your father had to be a Mason in order for you to become a DeMolay,"
said Chapter President Edwin Parsons. "That’s not the case anymore.
It’s all been opened up." DeMolay
advisers go through an in depth review and training process before being certified
by the organization. "I
had a speeding ticket once back in the 1970s and they (DeMolays) were right on
top of it," Parsons said. "They really review the advisers very well."
Parsons,
a DeMolay since childhood, said the club started up to support young boys who
had lost their fathers during World War 1. The organization, founded by Frank
S. Land, was designed to guide and mentor children by providing them with structure
and a sense of social responsibility. The experience of being involved with the
organization, Parsons said, is invaluable. "I
was a DeMolay growing up and it was a great experience," Parsons said. "The
friends I grew up with through the organization I’m still friends with to
this day. We’re excited because there could be fathers who were once DeMolays
here in town." The
chapter is wasting little time getting involved around the South Shore. Last Sunday,
the DeMolays hosted a catered dinner for senior citizens at the Cardinal Cushing
Center in Hanover. Five boys set up and served the dinners, catered by Family
Crest Catering, for 63 residents. Parsons said that all DeMolay sponsored events
are run by the kids. "These
boys run the chapter and the advisers advise," he said. "This dinner
was their idea and we let them run with it." Anyone
interested in joining the DeMolays are encouraged to attend the chapter’s
bi-weekly meetings. The chapter meets on the first and third Thursday of each
month from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Marshfield Masonic Lodge located at 420 Furnace
Street. |
